Journalist | Media Researcher | Professor
Gheni Platenburg is a lifelong storyteller. As a multimedia journalist, she spent time traveling the country, meeting new people and sharing their stories of joy, loss, survival and fortitude. Now as a college professor and researcher of journalism, she spends her days cultivating future journalists and gathering data to share stories focused on the intersection of black identity and media.
Currently, Gheni teaches undergraduate journalism and communication graduate courses at Auburn University. She recently expanded her teaching to include solutions journalism and community-based projects.
Gheni has a doctorate in media and public affairs from Louisiana State University. She also earned degrees from Florida A&M University and the University of Alabama.
Prior to her career in academia, Gheni worked as a multimedia journalist at both newspapers and television stations mostly across the South. She currently works as a freelance journalist for The Washington Post and Solutions Journalism Talent Networks and runs her own business, GNP Media Consulting.
Lastly, Gheni is a native of Houston. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two terriers—Whitley and Sadie.
